Company

Who owns RESMAN?

RESMAN is owned by venture capital funds (Statoil Invest and Verdane Capital), Research institutes, and employees.

Have you cooperated with service companies?

RESMAN has cooperated with all major service companies.  RESMAN has installed its wireless reservoir surveillance systems into an array of completion types for use in different completion applications.

Who are your customers?

Oil companies like Shell, Statoil, BP, ENI, ConocoPhillips, Chevron, BHP Billiton, Marathon, Maersk, Hess, Talisman, Pioneer,  Husky, Dong and RWE.

How many employees?

At the start of 2012 RESMAN was 35 persons worldwide and plan to be more than 40 by year end.

Where are you located?

RESMAN’s headquarters, labs and manufacturing facilities are located in Trondheim Norway.  We have regional offices in Stavanger, Houston, and Rio de Janeiro.

Technology: Chemistry

Do you use radioactive tracers?

No.

What is the tracer material made of?

The tracer systems are made of a range of unique chemical tracers in different types of polymer materials.

Will completion fluids and stimulation fluids such as acid affect the tracers?

RESMAN has tested its tracers with large range of completion fluids, stimulation fluids, corrosion inhibitors and other commonly used fluids in well operation. We have found that that RESMAN tracers is not impacted by the vast majority of these fluids. However it is important RESMAN know what fluids will be used during the course of a well’s life to ensure there are no compatibility issues..

Can you monitor water, oil and gas?

RESMAN marks water and oil.

What happens with the water tracer if water enters the well?

When the water wets the surface of the intelligent tracer material, tracer molecules are released from the material and enter the flow.

What happens if you have a breakthrough of injection water, then the injection water disappears?

When the water disappears, the intelligent tracer material stops releasing from the matrix.  If the water comes back later, the tracer will start releasing again.

Does reservoir temperature affect the tracers?

Yes, the temperature influences the leak out rate and is one an important design factor. RESMAN can deliver high temperature systems up to 170°C (335°F).

Does pressure affect the tracers?

No.

Will these tracers interact with other tracers, e.g. well to well tracers?

No. RESMAN have developed unique, intelligent tracers, for both oil and water, and analysis are not interfered by well to well tracers.

How long will your intelligent tracers systems last for?

The longevity of RESMAN's intelligent tracer systems is dependent on temperature, flow rate and completion deployment method. Intelligent oil systems are commonly designed for three years of life.  Intelligent water systems are normally designed for one year longevity -after- water breakthrough occurs.

Technology: Flow

Why is dilution at the sampling point important?'

If the flow from one well is comingled with flow from other wells before the sampling point, the concentration of the tracer in the total flow will be reduced. To compensate the system design must be done according to this.  As long as the concentration is above the detection limit, normally in the ppt (10-12) range, the tracer can be detected.

Can you work with heavy oil?

Yes, we have carried out projects with heavy oil, crudes with API down to 11 are tested.

Can the tracer matrix be eroded by sand production?

Even steel can be eroded by sand production.  However, RESMAN is able to construct special matrixes that withstand erosion to a very large extent.

Technology: Practicalities

Can you install in all types of completions?

All that is needed is a place to install the tracers. This can be in voids in sand screens or in specially made pup joints with such voids.

Can you retrofit tracers to an existing well?

All that is needed is a place to install the tracers. In this case, a tool containing tracers can be hung off at strategic locations in the well.

How many unique tracers do you have?

Currently 30 oil tracers and 30 water tracers.

Do all joints need to contain tracers?

No, RESMAN will calculate the required number of joints per tracer system. Number of joints with tracer will depend on monitoring needs regarding resolution and life length.

How big a sample do you need?

300 ml of non pressurized liquid sample is desired, but smaller volumes can in some cases be sufficient.

How many samples do you normally take?

During clean-up we may take 200 samples, of which less than 50 are finally analyzed.  A high number of samples available are important to be able to choose the right samples to analyze. For long term monitoring one sample per period is taken. One period may be a number of weeks.

Is it possible to analyze on site?

RESMAN is currently developing on site analysis capabilities for a limited number of tracers.

Can you analyze locally or do you need to send the samples to a central lab?

RESMAN’s main lab facility is in Trondheim, Norway.

Where is the ideal place to sample?

As close to the well head as possible and before the separator.

How long time does it take to get results?

From the samples arrive in the lab; the analysis normally takes less than a week.

Are there any environmental concerns with using the tracers?

No. All RESMAN tracers have been tested for environmental impact. The toxicity test, biodegradation and bioaccumulation are tested according to HOCNF and additional tests wherever that is required. By using amounts that give ppt levels in the fluids, any discharge will be diluted and give an environmental impact factor (EIF) of zero or close to zero.

Is the technology patented?

Yes. RESMAN has several patents covering the core technology and have an active patenting strategy.

Technology: Results

Do you provide quantitative results?

We are able to provide quantitative results for some applications.

Can RESMAN replace PLT?

RESMAN can be a good complement to PLT’s and in the life time of a well perhaps a few PLT runs can be eliminated.  For wells where PLT is too expensive or downright impossible, RESMAN may be the only alternative for inflow insight.

Applications

Does RESMAN have deepwater experience?

Yes.

In what reservoir temperature range have you deployed RESMAN tracers?

23-168°C (73-334°F)

Do you have solutions for subsea completions?

Yes.
